Growing Pains

We talk a lot about growing up when kids enter their teens. We tell them that they are suffering growing pains; that the angst is just part of growing up. We comfort them in their dating struggles, in their identity crises, and give them the same sage advice that we were given.

I think that we focus on the wrong demographic. The people that struggle the most are those that are exiting college. I don’t think that I’ve ever been more terrified in my life than I am right now, at this stage of life.

Becoming responsible for your life, a “grown-up” if you will, is scary. What if you mess up? What if it’s not what you expect it to be? Or rather, what television and books tell you it will be…

I feel lost, adrift in a sea of monsters. It’s scary, but you have to keep swimming to get to the other side. No turning back, no sitting where you are (the sharks will definitely get you then), only moving forward.

So here’s to being terrified. And to forward motion.
